What is Tar?

People’s perceptions of smoking-related tar can be cloudy at best. Many think it’s the same tar that’s used to resurface roads, or the brown residue seen in used cigarette filters. It’s really neither.

It’s a weight measurement of leftover solid particles in smoke when nicotine and water are removed.

How does it relate to smoking?

Tar can be a useful measurement for taste intensity, but lower numbers never mean that a particular product is safe, safer, or less harmful than another.

“THERE IS NO TAR IN SMOKE-FREE ALTERNATIVES”

Smoke-free products are just that - free of smoke. Smoke contains a mix of solid and liquid particles found in the residue, which is referred to as tar. As smoke-free products don’t burn tobacco, they don’t create smoke or solid particles, so tar is not present.

Smoke-free products produce far lower average levels of harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes, when backed by science and made to a high standard. They are not risk-free and still deliver nicotine, which is addictive. The best way to minimize harm is to quit cigarettes and nicotine altogether.
