Smoke-free Technologies

As society evolves and we discover better ways of doing things, safety measures and innovations are woven into everyday life to protect us. This concept of using technology and creative thinking to provide us with more efficient or less harmful choices is nothing new and can be applied to smoking too.

How can innovation end smoking?

Just like sunscreen protects our skin from burning in the sun and bicycle helmets protect us from serious head injuries, innovation can create better choices for everyone.

The same logic can be used to reduce tobacco-related risks too.

It’s widely known that smoking is dangerous. Many incorrectly believe nicotine to be the primary source of harm, but while it is addictive and not risk-free, it’s the high levels of harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke that is the main cause of smoking-related diseases – not nicotine.

Quitting Altogether

The best thing any smoker can do is quit tobacco and nicotine altogether, but for those who don’t, smoke-free products are a way of reducing exposure to the many harmful chemicals found in smoke.

Smoke-Free Technology

Smoke-free products are innovations that use different methods to deliver nicotine, which is one of many reasons why people smoke, but share one common characteristic: they do not produce smoke. These include e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products, snus, and nicotine pouches.

The development of battery technology has helped the rise of many smoke-free products. Devices are now small enough, meaning they can deliver the ritual and feel adult smokers look for, as well as taste. Although there are smoke-free products that require no device at all.

It’s a good thing that adult smokers who don’t quit have a variety of different alternatives to smoking to choose from. A smoke-free future is only possible if adult smokers who don’t quit find these products acceptable substitutes to cigarettes. It’s important to remember that there are many different smoke-free products, and each should be scientifically validated on its own merits.

When made to appropriate standards, science-backed smoke-free products have the potential to be less harmful than continuing to smoke but they are addictive and are not risk-free. Smoke-free technology can help end smoking for good.

Paired with measures that discourage people from starting and encourage smokers to stop, encouraging smokers who don’t quit to switch to less harmful alternatives can take us one step closer to a future free from cigarette smoke. For existing smokers, there is always a better choice than continuing to smoke.
