Reducing Harm

Sometimes, taking a step back is helpful to take in the broader picture. When smokers want to better understand smoke-free products, it’s only natural that they are interested in how they compare cigarettes, and to quitting.

What’s the difference?

It's no secret that cigarettes are the most harmful way to consume nicotine. When the nicotine is burned, it reaches high temperatures and produces smoke.

This smoke contains high levels of harmful chemicals, over 100 of which have been identified as potential causes of smoking-related diseases.

For those that don’t quit, smoke-free alternatives can be less harmful than continuing to smoke cigarettes.

What are smoke-free alternatives?

Smoke-free alternatives, as the name suggests, don't produce smoke, the main cause of smoking-related diseases.

Instead, inhalable devices like heated tobacco and e-cigarettes produce vapor that contains far lower levels of harmful chemicals compared to cigarettes.

Whilst they are addictive and not risk-free, this fundamental difference makes smoke-free alternatives a better choice than continued smoking.

Of course, quitting nicotine and tobacco altogether is always the best choice. However, each year, 9 out of 10 smokers don’t quit, which is why it’s important for them to know about better, smoke-free alternatives.

Understanding the whole picture can help adult smokers make an informed decision for their health.
